A recent performance by Utah may encourage a trade for Red Wing star defenseman

One of the latest efforts of the Utah Mammoth defense kind of showed that a trade for a Red Wing star defenseman might not be a bad idea.

The Utah Mammoth were crushed on Thursday night. The Boston Bruins did what they wanted to do when they wanted to do it in their 6-1 win.

Unfortunately, Utah showed significant weakness, specifically defensively.

The Mammoth defense was terrible... Do they need Simon Edvinsson?

The Bruins managed only 22 shots on goal, while Utah had 37. Somehow the Mammoth still lost 6-1.

Why? Well, because Utah's defense was terrible. Maveric Lamoureux is injured for 4-6 months, but he is probably the reason why the Mammoth struggled so much on Thursday night.

Honestly, Thursday showed that the Mammoth may need another big defenseman to help the team. Right now, the Detroit Red Wings are shopping Simon Edvinsson. Edvinsson is 23, was drafted sixth overall in 2021, and is 6-6.

He has become a big part of the Red Wings, as he is a strong defender and an effective offensive defenseman. Right now however, the RFA hasn't quite struck a deal with Detroit. This means that acquiring him would require a trade and signing.

But this also means that Edvinsson shouldn't be as expensive as a typical young star hockey player. Trading for him would make sense with this showing from the defenders. Of course, this last game was only one game.

Utah can bounce back tomorrow and largely forget about what occurred. But this performance is certainly concerning. 22 shots on goal should lead to no more than two goals allowed - not six.

If Utah wants to perform better in the future, when you outshoot an opponent by 15 shots on goal, it's probably a good thing not to lose by 5 goals.

Utah bounced back well on Saturday with a 4-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres, but it will be hard to completely forget the loss at the hands of Bruins.
