Even after making the postseason and possessing some of the best young talent in the game, it still feels like the Utah Mammoth are underrated. The true question is: can the Mammoth become one of the best teams in the NHL? Perhaps they already are. Utah has had quite the offseason, and it seems like Utah can only improve. The main problem is simple: the Central Division is incredibly strong, and Utah needs to perform very well to have much success.
Is Utah one of the best teams in the NHL coming into the 2026-27 season
Utah did lose some talent by trading JJ Peterka to the Boston Bruins for two first-round draft picks. However, even then, Peterka cost 7.7 million and performed, while Utah also traded one first-rounder from Boston for a much-needed goalie. Utah arguably got better by trading Peterka, but that was only the beginning of the offseason, as of course, Utah also traded for a superstar in Vincent Trocheck and signed veteran star Anders Lee. Both bring valuable skills and experience, making the Mammoth a better team. The GM of the Mammoth recognized that the team, which is still quite young, needed some veterans without sacrificing talent, which is a recipe for success.
The Mammoth have several young stars that could blossom into superstars as well. This includes Logan Cooley, 22, who scored 24 goals in only 54 games, and two mega prospects. The mega prospects include Tij Iginla and Caleb Desnoyers. However, the biggest of the two, Iginla, could really make a large impact next season, as Iginla seems to really be the next superstar. The soon-to-be 20-year-old scored 41 goals and 90 assists in only 48 games in the WHL. Interestingly, Iginla also seems to be determined to reach the NHL.
When it comes to prospects that could have an immediate impact, Iginla definitely seems to be one of those guys. Ultimately, Utah's core was already good after this season. A couple of things are true: young players usually grow into better players, if not superstars, and Utah has plenty of those guys. And, of course, having veterans to lead that group is a very good idea. The Carolina Hurricanes, who won the 2026 Stanley Cup, had quite a few veterans who helped the team immensely. Overall, Utah definitely won the offseason, and it should be exciting to see the kind of team Utah can become in the 2026-27 season.
