The Utah Mammoth can probably smile at the fact that an old legend of the Chicago Blackhawks signed with Chicago. Why? Well, that deal seems to be a bit insane. Mammoth fans love it when a team takes itself out of contention like this. The Central Division has plenty of great teams, and it will only benefit the Mammoth if one of them makes a pretty big mistake. This deal between the Hawks and Patrick Kane seems to be a pretty big mistake.
Patrick Kane signed to a 2-year, $8M AAV deal by Chicago
Kane is widely seen as the GOAT of American hockey players, or the greatest of all time. Kane has scored 508 goals and 1,400 points in his career. Throughout his tenure with the Detroit Red Wings, Kane was an effective scorer, averaging around 20 goals when healthy. Before that, Kane played 19 games with the New York Rangers in the 2022-23 season. Kane is going to be remembered as a Blackhawk, though, as Kane played between the years 2007-2008 and 2022-23 with Chicago. Kane can definitely still score goals, as he has proven with Detroit. However, even then, he proved that he isn't the superstar he used to be, and giving him eight million AAV is ridiculous.
The 37-year-old struggled to stay healthy in Detroit, so giving him this kind of money while he is even older is a pretty dumb move by the Hawks. Eight million a year can be spent on someone younger, with more potential, who can help a team rebuild. Chicago is still rebuilding, even with some undeniably great talent. The Central Division is probably going to beat up on the Hawks, and adding Kane seems pretty pointless. A lot of teams are looking for a chance to compete, and using the services of a veteran like Kane could be very helpful.
However, the Hawks are rebuilding and paid Kane way too much. The Mammoth offseason and the Blackhawk offseason have certainly been two different things. Maybe Kane is worth the money- but even then, who needs to pay a fragile veteran eight million when you're in all likelihood rebuilding? Yikes.
