The NHL is looking to expand. That doesn't affect the Utah Mammoth in some ways, but it could in other ways.
The Mammoth currently sit in the Central Division. However, sooner or later, that could change because of some cities that are being considered.
Utah might head to a new division
Before the Seattle Kraken, the Arizona Coyotes, the predecessor of the Mammoth, were in the Pacific Division. Arizona moved to the Central Division and remains there today as the Mammoth.
That might change, though, with some of the proposed cities. Two cities that might get a new NHL team are both in Texas. Houston and Austin, who are both in Texas and in the Midwest. This means that Utah could be displaced from the Central Division.
Both cities are in the Midwest, so creating a team in either city would only make sense if either of them were in the Central Division. This could lead to the NHL moving teams around once again, and the team that's in the Central Division that would make the most sense to move is Utah.
Utah borders Nevada, so they could immediately rival the Vegas Golden Knights. It would be a little frustrating, though, to face the Colorado Avalanche and St. Louis Blues. Right now, it isn't certain that teams are coming to Texas or that teams will have to move a division, but Utah is probably the first team to leave the Central Division.
