The New Jersey Devils, after a disappointing season, are deciding to switch things up a bit. The Devils current starting goalie, Jacob Markstrom, is reportedly being shopped by the team, which makes a lot of sense considering their other goalies aren't too bad and the team pretty much needs a goalie who has less risk going into next season. With that being said, even with a pretty weak goalie position, the Utah Mammoth should stay far away.

Markstrom had extremely bad 2025-26 season

There are many reasons why the Mammoth should stay far away from Markstrom. Firstly, Markstrom, despite being a pretty good goalie throughout his career, had a really bad 2025-26 season. Markstrom's stats in 2025-26 were awful: 23-19-1, 3.07 GAA, .883 SV%, 1 SO. This wasn't any small sample either, as Markstrom put up these numbers in 44 games. Secondly, Markstrom is 36-years-old, meaning this season could be a sign of his decline.

And lastly, Markstrom is too risky for a Mammoth team that already doesn't have a strong goalie position. Adding a veteran that could potentially be bad, with already having some questionable goalies could create a pretty big issue. The Edmonton Oilers showed that having a solid goalie is all too important, especially after being eliminated by the Anaheim Ducks because of poor goalie play. Not to mention, the Oilers lack of a good goalie in previous seasons cost them a couple of Stanley Cups.

The Mammoth should trade for a more reliable goalie

Instead of considering someone like Markstrom, if the Mammoth are to trade for a goalie, there are quite a few names out there that are better options then the older Markstrom. This includes Sebastian Cossa, who Utah has showed interest in, Adin Hill, who could be worth the trade, and others. With the goalie position being kind of weak for Utah, with their primary backup, Vitek Vanecek, who is thankfully a free agent, having a .883 SV% himself this season, there is no need to risk it.

The Mammoth aren't going to scramble for a goalie, even if they have interest, so deciding to trade for Markstrom would probably be a very dumb idea. Markstrom is a good goalie and has been in his career, but being 36 and showing major decline is too much, and that should really push the Mammoth away from Markstrom. If Utah is to trade for a goalie, then they should definitely consider a younger, more reliable option.
