The free agent is pretty weak this season and lacks superstars- well, because it doesn't have any. Everyone who may become a free agent is basically a veteran who isn't going to add too much to a team. The free agent class got even weaker with a blockbuster trade that will see Buffalo Sabre Alex Tuch head to the Washington Capitals. Which means the Utah Mammoth are going to have to look in the trade market to improve.
Washington pulls off another trade
On Tuesday, the Capitals traded for Jordan Kyrou, a player who had a very disappointing 2025-26 season but has historically scored 30 or more goals. The Capitals, however, aren't done adding to their team, as they have completed a trade-and-sign with the Sabres. Tuch would've been easily the best unrestricted free agent out on the market, but the Sabres cashed in before he could hit the market, trading for a 3rd round pick and giving the Caps Tuch.
Tuch has reportedly signed an eight-year, $84M deal, which is $ 10.5 M per year. The Sabres simply didn't want to pay the 30-year-old that much money, even with his offensive talent. Tuch has scored at least 33 goals in three out of the last four seasons, becoming a staple of the Sabres offense. The Capitals are in need of some good goal scorers, and over the last couple of days, they have gotten a couple of them.
With such news, the Mammoth are going to have to look in the trade market for a big stick if they want one. The Mammoth may very well try to fix smaller issues before addressing anything else, but it wouldn't be surprising to see the team want to get someone big in the market. It will be very exciting to see what the next few days hold though, that is for sure.
