One of the most interesting storylines for the Utah Mammoth as the offseason continues isBarrett Hayton. After receiving an offer sheet from another team, many assumed he wouldn't be in Utah anymore. Apparently, though, that might not be true at all. The Mammoth apparently are expected to match the offer for Hayton- even with all of the risk involved.
Should Utah really match the offer?
Essentially, it should be expected that the Mammoth are going to match a one-year, $4.775M from the New Jersey Devils to Hayton. The deal isn't too expensive by any means, but many thought Hayton wouldn't be in Utah after this offer. If Utah were to match the offer, as they have until July 8th to do so, Utah cannot trade Hayton for a whole season. Interestingly, Utah may not even be able to get anything for Hayton if they do, which is quite risky.
However, Utah can only get a 2nd round pick in the 2027 NHL draft if they don't match the offer. Essentially, the Mammoth must ask themselves if they are really willing to trade him for so little. But, in addition to asking themselves this, they must also ask if they are willing to use up that much salary on a player who has struggled. Hayton, 26, scored only 10 goals and added a minuscule 15 assists one season after scoring 20 goals and adding 46 assists. Essentially, the former 5th overall selection (2018) took a dissapointing step back.
Hayton can still be an offensive force for any team, but 26 isn't a young age. The time for a breakout from Hayton is running out. The need for Hayton is also not really there, thanks to multiple moves made by the GM Bill Armstrong. However, the team also wouldn't hurt too much from adding depth with Hayton and only getting a 2nd-rounder for their former high overall selection wouldn't be too fun. It will be interesting to see what Utah decides.
