It is official. The Utah Hockey team has a name. It's no longer the "Utah Hockey Club." The team is officially known as "Utah Mammoth."
Does Utah Mammoth have a nice ring to it? Is it a genius name for a franchise?
It's not easy to come up with a name for anything, whether it's a book title or a name for a team franchise. Utah Mammoth doesn't sound too intriguing, but it might change our opinion sometime in the future.
In the meantime, we can't help but scratch our heads because of the word "Mammoth."
There could've been other names that would sound better than Utah
Utah Stars: However, the issue is that we have the Dallas Stars, and there was a former WNBA team called the "Utah Starzz," which was active during the late 90s and early 2000s. The word "stars" sounds impeccable.
Utah Lakes: Salt Lake City is part of Utah, and "lakes" sounds more catchy than "Mammoth."
Utah Thrashers: This one would've been perfect for Utah had it not been for the Atlanta Thrashers, a hockey franchise that used to exist. We don't know if the Atlanta Thrashers would make a comeback, but the name sounds cool.
Utah Harmony or Harmonies: This team has a lot of harmony. You can see it on the ice. Harmony refers to many things, such as "team chemistry, brotherhood, unity, family-oriented," and much more. This name is better than the other options.
The Mammoth failed to make the playoffs this season. The team finished with a 38-31 record and secured 89 points. This team is good enough to compete but is missing some pieces.
The Mammoth have the fourth overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft. This is a big step for the franchise because they moved up 10 stops to land the fourth pick.
Will the team trade away its draft pick for a top free agent? It's highly unlikely, but they should keep it. The team needs to scout and draft the right player to help anchor this franchise on a winning championship path.
Logan Cooley and Dylan Guenther are the best players from the Utah Mammoth. For the team to reach an elite level, the Mammoth needs at least one defenseman or one more great scorer.
All eyes and pressure are on General Manager Bill Armstrong to deliver on this privatization. The Mammonth can no longer be the laughingstock or a team that no one will take seriously. The team must get the right guy, beginning at the draft.
