Last year, the Utah Mammoth decided to pull off a trade that brought the then 23-year-old German, JJ Peterka, to Utah. Peterka had previously done really well with the Buffalo Sabres, but couldn't quite repeat his success with the Mammoth in the 2026-27 season. Now, Utah has decided to trade Peterka to the Boston Bruins for a really good return. Perhaps they may even seek to set something up on a larger scale with the return they got. Ultimately, it seems like this may be just the beginning of a massive offseason for Utah...
JJ Peterka traded for two first-round picks
The Bruins, who didn't score enough last season, are going to try to get help from Peterka. Peterka's stats in his first season for the Mammoth weren't horrible, but they weren't great either: 25 G, 22 A, 47 PTS, 6 +/-. Peterka just didn't give the offense the Mammoth were hoping for in his first season with them, and they decided to free up 7 million in salary cap room and get a couple of first-round picks as well as a result of this. Peterka still has plenty of time to become what Utah hoped he would be, as he is only 24 and still scored enough goals to raise eyebrows with Utah.
Utah still, though, got a pretty good trade because of their intentions, which might be different than actually trading for picks. In other words, the Mammoth may be seeking to trade for someone big, especially since they now have more assets and now have more salary cap room. Ultimately, the Bruins get a really good offensive player with a bright future, while Utah gets a very good return. It is a possibility that Utah keeps these picks, but it also seems like they may have different intentions.
