Joshua Roy was traded to the Utah Mammoth over the offseason. The 23-year-old never quite found his footing in the NHL in Montreal.
Unfortunately for Roy, he may find it hard to fend off some young Mammoth players.
Will Roy continue to struggle to reach the NHL?
Roy has played 38 games in his NHL career, scoring six goals and adding only five assists over three seasons. The hope for Roy is that he can finally establish himself as a permanent NHL player, which he never could do for the Canadians.
The bad news for Roy is that there are plenty of prospects in the Mammoth organization, with many of those guys potentially putting a ton of pressure on Roy. Daniil But, for example, has already flexed his capabilities in preseason and in the rookie showcase, locking up a spot on the NHL roster.
Tij Iginla's future isn't set in stone, but once he is healthy, it's safe to assume he will be in the NHL given his potential. Vincent Trocheck moving to winger from the center position adds another winger to the NHL roster, really crowding things for Roy.
Roy's future depends on how well he performs and how Utah wants to use its forwards. But Roy is definitely not a lock for the NHL roster to begin the season.
And if young guys like But or Iginla can do well in the NHL, then the issue of not being able to become a permanent member of an NHL team will only continue for Roy.
