With all of the talented superstar defenseman in the NHL like Quinn Hughes, Evan Bouchard, Cale Makar, and Zack Werenski, it feels easy to forget about other guys who can be just as good.
Through seven games of 2026-27, one Mammoth defenseman has been very good: Mikhail Sergachev.
Mikhai Sergachev has been a huge part of Utah's offense so far
Only two defenseman in 2026-27 have more points than Sergachev right now, Bouchard (14 pts) and Hughes (10 pts). The Edmonton Oiler offense has so far been the best in the NHL, which is no surprise with players like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.
Sergachev has totaled nine points so far with two goals and seven assists. Sergachev had a career season in 2022-23 with the Tampa Bay Lightning with 10 goals and 54 assists. After being injured for the majority of his final season in Tampa, Sergachev was traded to Utah, where he scored 15 goals and added 38 assists in 2024-25.

Last season, Sergachev was still great with 10 goals and 49 assists in 78 games. This season, the 27-year-old defender has started to take off offensively like never before. This includes on the power play and in 5-on-5 hockey. Were still early in the season, but it feels like he is becoming a bigger part of the Mammoth offense.
And honestly, having a defenseman who can be a problem in the offensive zone is getting more and more common, especially with guys like Hughes and Lane Hutson, who both can be problems and create offense at any given moment. So far, Sergachev has been Utah's offensive problem as a defender.
Clayton Keller, Nick Schmaltz, and Sergachev are all tied for the lead in points on the team with nine. If Sergachev can continue to put up great offensive numbers, then that will only help Utah in the long run. It will be very interesting to see if he continues to push the offense as well as he has through seven games.
