On Friday, the Mammoth pulled off several moves, with one move addressing their biggest issue, the backup goalie issue. First, the Mammoth traded away JJ Peterka, freeing up $7.7 million and getting two first round picks in the process. The Mammoth then used the 23rd overall selection of the 2026 NHL draft to trade for a goalie, Sebastian Cossa. Now, the Mammoth have extended their new goalie and hope to get some amazing years out of him.

Cossa, Mammoth agree to 2-year deal

Even before the conclusion of the Stanley Cup Finals, in which the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Vegas Golden Knights 4-2, the Mammoth were reportedly seeking to trade for a goalie. One of the goalies they were seeking was the Detroit Red Wing prospect Sebastian Cossa. Cossa was drafted 15th overall in the first round of the 2023 NHL draft, which is very high for a goalie. Cossa, 23 and 6'6'', was not rushed at all by the Red Wings, and Cossa remained in the minors, including the AHL, for the last three seasons.

Cossa debuted in the 2024-25 season with Detroit, in which he won while recording 12 saves on 14 shots on goal. Cossa was unable to see the NHL this last season thanks to Detroit acquiring a new goalie, which led Detroit to shop the former first-round pick. Utah traded the 23rd overall pick, which they got from the Bruins for Peterka to get Cossa, and now have extended him. Cossa has signed a 2-year, $4M deal that is not very risky. This will allow Cossa to prove himself if he can and get a larger deal worth more if he does well.

Simply put, the Mammoth have addressed a major issue, which was their backup goalie situation. The Mammoth also aren't completely sure that there starter is going to do what he did last season either, so the trade and sign was a good move from the front office. Hopefully, Cossa can do what the Red Wings drafted him to do.
