On July 1st, the Utah Mammoth made a couple of great moves. However, in the latter part of the day, the Mammoth received an offer sheet from the New Jersey Devils for Barrett Hayton. Hayton has had an interesting but mostly disappointing career, and the Mammoth had one week to match the offer. Now, however, Utah has done so, hoping to get a breakout from Hayton and adding some more depth as well.

Mammoth re-sign Hayton

After receiving a one-year, $4.775$M offer from the Devils, the Mammoth decided to match the offer exactly and sign their former 5th overall selection to a one-year, $4.78M deal (2018). The Mammoth had pretty much made their biggest moves of the offseason, and this move should be the last significant move. Hayton may or may not be in the top nine of Utah, but at the very least, the center adds some depth and even capabilities to score. Hayton, in 67 games this last season, scored only 10 goals and added 15 assists, which isn't great considering that the season prior, he scored 20 goals and added 26 assists.

The great majority of Mammoth fans felt as if the move wouldn't be a great one to re-sign the 26-year-old Hayton, considering his expense. Not to mention, Utah cannot trade Hayton for a full year. This means there is a chance that Utah may lose Hayton for nothing, as if he continues to underperform, then there is no reason to sign him to an extension. The Mammoth also would've received a 2027 second-round pick as compensation for their former high pick. This deal is probably GM Bill Armstrong's riskiest so far. However, at the same time, Hayton isn't a horrible player by any means, and it could pay off. This will definitely be interesting to see how it all works out.
