In 2024, the Utah Mammoth had a few great draft picks. One guy who shows this is Tij Iginla, one of the NHL's top prospects right now.
However, one second-round selection has made a significant decision as he tries to improve his chances of having an impact on the NHL team.
Will Skahan is heading to Minnesota State, Mankato
Will Skahan was drafted in the second round, 65th overall, by Utah in 2024. The last two seasons, Skahan played for the Boston College Eagles.
The 20-year-old, 6-5 defenseman can be a great defender and a problem for opposing offenses. But he's decided to improve his game before heading to a professional league. Skahan will play the 2026-27 season with Minnesota State University, Mankato.
“I know I can get back to what I was before,” Skahan explained. “Lead a team and hopefully win a national championship with (Mankato) and get some more playing time.
“I think my skating needs to improve,” Skahan also shared. “My defensive game needs to improve as well, and also get some points too. That’ll be nice.”
Before heading to the Mammoth organization, the defenseman should try to improve his game. Utah has no shortage of prospects, so it wouldn't be easy for Skahan to potentially reach the NHL roster or even the AHL roster.
The good news is that second-round selections can be critical to a team's success. Hopefully, Skahan can keep developing in college and use his last season in Mankato to improve. Utah seems to love their big, physical defenseman. So Skahan may be a interesting prospect for the team in the future.
