It is critical for a young team like the Utah Mammoth to have veteran's for experience and leadership.
Hence, Utah added two vets, Vincent Trocheck and Anders Lee, over the offseason to help their younger guys. One potential threat in the Western Conference, the Anaheim Ducks, were just forced to part ways with one of their most valuable veterans.
Chris Kreider becomes UFA
The longtime New York Ranger, Chris Kreider, was critical to Anaheim's success in the 2025-26 season. The 35-year-old scored 22 goals and added 28 assists in the regular season.
Kreider was still key, however, to the Ducks' upset of the Edmonton Oilers in the postseason before they were eliminated by the eventual Stanley Cup runner-up, the Vegas Golden Knights, scoring two goals and adding five assists.
While Kreider might not put up the biggest numbers in 2026-27, for a team like Anaheim, which has no shortage of young players, this is a major loss.
Both sides, Kreider and the Ducks, have agreed to terminate the contract. For the Ducks, this makes sense, as they are still trying to find a way to sign 22-year-old superstar Cutter Gauthier. Gauthier's contract is bound to be expensive after he scored 41 goals in the 2026-27 season.
Plus, it doesn't help Anaheim that Leo Carlsson received such a large AAV contract. Kreider is now set to go someplace else, as he will be a UFA. Many teams may be looking for a veteran like that. A veteran who felt like he added another layer of protection and depth for the Ducks.
Even with the Central Division and the Western Conference as good as they are, the Mammoth still suffer when a young, potentially dangerous team loses a key player. Utah likely won't look to add Kreider, but it's worth noting that the Ducks have suffered another potential loss.
