It was reported weeks ago that the Utah Mammoth were interested in a Detroit Red Wing goalie. It turns out this was completely true, as the Utah Mammoth decided to pull off another trade that should improve the team massively. Utah needed a good backup who could potentially start, and it seems they got exactly what they needed by acquiring Sebastian Cossa, a top-5 goalie prospect.
Mammoth trade for massive goalie prospect Sebastian Cossa
After the 2025-26 season, it was clear that the Mammoth lacked a good backup goalie. The main backup goalie was Vitek Vanecek, who was just 5-13-5 with a .883 SV% for Utah. Vanecek is soon to become a free agent and most certainly won't remain in Utah. With that being said, the Mammoth needed to find a good backup goalie, and they decided that the best way to get one was by trading for one. Friday night, the Mammoth started things up by trading JJ Peterka for two first round picks.
One of those is in 2028, but the other was 23rd overall in the 2026 NHL draft. To put it simply, it was thought Cossa would be more expensive than just the 23rd overall selection, but Utah pulled off that trade anyway. The Red Wings lacked a first-round pick in this draft and probably need some young talent, but one can't help but feel the trade was one-sided. Cossa is seen as one of the top five goalie prospects after being drafted in the 2023 NHL draft, 15th overall.
Cossa, 23, in the AHL this season, put up some really nice numbers: 26-8-4, .915 SV%, 2.33 GAA, 5 SO. The Red Wings definitely didn't rush Cossa, and it seems to have paid off pretty well as Cossa has developed pretty well. Interestingly, Cossa is also 6'6'', bringing some impressive size to the position and making the trade even better. The Mammoth needed a goalie, and they just went out there and got one, the best they could find. Last night, the Mammoth front office pulled off some amazing things.
