Utah has several young potential stars who could be the franchise's future.
The top 5 prospects of Utah
The list includes:
F, Tij Iginla
F, Caleb Desnoyers
G, Sebastian Cossa
F, Ethan Belchetz
D, Dimtri Simashev
Leading the list is, unsurprisingly, Tij Iginla. Iginla is likely to make the NHL roster to open the 2026-27 season after scoring 41 goals and 90 points in just 48 WHL games. Unfortunately, the second mega prospect this team has, Caleb Desnoyers, likely won't.
Desnoyers seems injured and may need to be fully healthy before trying to reach the NHL. Iginla was selected sixth overall in the 2024 NHL draft, while Desnoyers was selected 4th overall in the 2025 NHL draft.
Interestingly, newly acquired goalie Sebastian Cossa, drafted 15th overall in the 2023 NHL draft, comes in at No. 3. Cossa was acquired to back up Karel Vejmelka and become the franchise's future goalie. Cossa is a rarity in terms of being drafted high as a goalie.
At No. 4, the newest first-round selection by Utah, the 17th overall of the 2025 draft, the 6-5 Ethan Belchetz. Belchetz fell a few spots in the draft, leading Utah to trade up and steal him away. Not much is known about the forward for now, but he hasn't looked bad at all. Not to mention, the overall size of Belchetz makes him a very intriguing prospect.
Finally, at No. 5 is defenseman Dmitri Simashev. Drafted sixth overall in 2023, Simashev faces a big responsibility in 2026-27. After losing some defensemen, Utah places a lot of hope in players like Simashev and others. The defenseman could be key to Utah's defense. It's no surprise he ranks so high.
