The NHL EDGE stats are great. Why? Because it highlights strengths that some people might overlook.
Utah has three strengths that NHL.com pointed out that could be used to their advantage.
Utah's three strengths that may lead to a successful 2026-27 season
High-danger scoring was the first thing that was highlighted:
"The Mammoth had three players with at least 15 high-danger goals last season in forwardsNick Schmaltz (22; tied for 10th in NHL),Dylan Guenther (16) and Logan Cooley(15); the only teams with more such players were the Buffalo Sabres, Tampa Bay Lightning and Vegas Golden Knights (four each). Other Utah players with double-digit high-danger goal totals last season included forwards Clayton Keller (12),Lawson Crouse(11) andJJ Peterka (10; traded to Boston Bruins on June 26)."
This is already impressive, but Utah added Anders Lee and Vincent Trocheck, both of whom are effective in high-danger scoring as well. This strength is one of the best a team could have. Utah jumped from being 21st in goal scoring in the 2024-25 season to 12th in the 2025-26 season. Hopefully, such stats could help the Mammoth continue to climb that list.
Logan Cooley's speed and goal scoring was the second stat that was highlighted:
"He ranked fourth in the NHL in max skating speed (24.38 mph) last season, was tied for eighth in 22-plus mph speed bursts (33) and also ranked highly among forwards in 20-plus mph bursts (214; 97th percentile). As a team, Utah ranked fourth in both 22-plus mph speed bursts (127) and 20-plus mph bursts (2,207)."
Cooley scored 24 goals in only 54 games last season. The combination of Dylan Guenther and Cooley proved deadly. Cooley's speed, combined with also being a good shooter, could lead to a massive breakout. He wasn't ranked on NHL.com's Top 20 centers, but he has the ability to rank among the best easily.
If Cooley could grow into one of the best centers in the NHL, then that could change the whole dynamic of the team. With that kind of talent, Utah could be one of the best teams in the NHL. These stats are definitely worth noting.
Finally, the EDGE stats highlighted the 40-goal scorer, Guenther:
"Guenther, who was one of 15 players in the NHL to score at least 40 goals last season and ranked ninth in the League in even-strength goals (31), had a breakout performance backed by elite underlying metrics.
Guenther excelled in perimeter shot metrics last season; he was in the top 10 of the NHL in mid-range goals (17; tied for eighth), while also finishing among the top 10 forwards in long-range shots on goal (40; sixth) and long-range goals (three; tied for 10th). He had one of the most well-rounded shots-by-location profiles among forwards by also ranking highly in mid-range shots on goal (97; 97th percentile), high-danger goals (92nd percentile) and high-danger shots on goal (59; 83rd percentile)."
Guenther added something Utah didn't have. He was THAT guy. That player who could completely turn a team around with his talent. And these stats show that Guenther wasn't just getting lucky. He was amazing.
Guenther is also only 23, so he has the chance to be even better. Guenther's ceiling is a top-20 NHL player.
These stats point to the strength of Utah's offense. Utah could be much better than some people think in 2026-27.
