As the 2026 offseason is underway, there has been plenty of news and big trades that have occurred over the last few days. Most recently, a potential trade target for the Utah Mammoth was traded from the Buffalo Sabers to the Chicago Blackhawks for a high first-round pick. It will definitely be interesting to see who the Mammoth decides to target with so many trades taking place this offseason so far.

Bowen Bryam to Chicago, Sabres get 4th overall pick

One of the biggest reasons for the Mammoth's success this last season was the defense. And it wouldn't have been a horrible idea to add Bowen Byram to a defensive core that was so successful last season. With the assets the team has, the Mammoth were one team that could've taken on the price of Byram, which wasn't cheap by any means. The deal saw defenseman Byram and forward Jordan Greenway head to Chicago for the 4th overall pick of the 2026 NHL Draft and Louis Crevier.

Byram scored a career-high 42 points in the 2025-26 season, with 11 goals and 31 assists. Byram, 25, also had a 15 +/-, highlighting the speedster's value on the ice. The Sabres after a successful 2025-26 season pretty much had no chance at retaining Byram, who is seeking a lot of money. This led the team to look for a trade partner, and the Blackhawks gave up a lot for him. This takes one player off the board for the Mammoth that they could've afforded, even though there weren't many rumors linking Byram to Utah. After all, though, Utah was a perfect fit.

The Mammoth may make a trade soon

With so much action in the NHL trade market right now, it is pretty inevitable that Utah is going to look for a trade partner sooner rather than later. The Mammoth could very well seek to trade for someone as early as today or this week, as many players are on the trade market, and those who have no-trade clauses may have Utah on their lists of teams they would be traded to.

For now, Utah needs to determine what they need most and trade for it. It is important for the team, since they are as young as they are, to be careful with the assets and youth they have. Hopefully, the Mammoth will soon find a good trade partner and pull off a trade that helps the team a lot.
