The Utah Mammoth last week suffered a major injury that could have major implications on it's defenseman corps.
Apparently, the Mammoth are already looking to get themselves a big defenseman in trade talks with the Detroit Red Wings. And that defenseman is Simon Edvinsson.
Utah is pursuing Simon Edvinsson
On Oct. 5th in an column in Casino Guru, NHL insider Frank Seravalli showed that the Utah Mammoth are pushing the hardest for the Detroit Red Wings big defender.
"Sources say the Utah Mammoth have emerged as one of the most eager suitors for Simon Edvinsson, who is back training in Sweden during this contract stalemate. As Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported, Edvinsson at this point prefers to be traded rather than work out a deal."
The 6'6" defenseman was selected sixth overall in 2021 and has yet to work out a deal with the Red Wings. Now, it seems like the 23-year-old may want out of Detroit, just like Dylan Larkin.
Edvinsson most recently scored nine goals and added 16 assists in 72 games in the 2025-26 season with a nice 12 +/-. Edvinsson had the same +/- the prior season but also managed 24 assists and seven goals.
This puts the Red Wings in a rough spot. Detroit hasn't even made the postseason in a while. Already, the Red Wings haven't even traded their former captain Larkin. The situation there is unknown as Detroit is still probably trying to find the best suitor.

Now, it seems like the best defender this team has, and one of the best players on the team, also wants out of Michigan. The RFA may have to work out a trade and a deal by the end of this. Utah has already completed a trade for a player from Detroit in 2026, with a trade on the night of the NHL draft for Sebastian Cossa, a former first round pick and goalie.
The return on a trade like this is still a big question. Will Detroit seek a lot given his age and the undeniable talent he has shown thus far? Or are the Red Wings going to give him away at a discount, given the fact that he is an RFA?
One thing is for sure: Utah loves big, physical defenders. Utah hoped that with Maveric Lamoureux and Dmitri Simashev, they would be a force to be reckoned with in 2026-27. Unfortunately, however, Lamoureux will be out for 4-6 months.
In other words, a trade for the youngster Edvinsson would make a lot of sense - as long as the return isn't too much, Utah can get him for a low price and eventually have Lamoureux back. Well, wow. The Mammoth will be rather terrifying to deal with. Such size is hard to beat in hockey.
