Many NHL teams try to form an identity. Some try to be fast, quick, and tough to defend. Others may try something else.
But the Utah Mammoth look like they are trying to form an identity around being big and physical. This may help the Mammoth in the future, especially on the defensive side of things.
Utah is clearly trying to go big and tall, which may help them in the long run
The Mammoth have many different prospects, showing that Utah has been trying to draft big, tall, and physical players. Utah hopes to use big and physical players to help them dominate in the future.
Utah has drafted Dmitri Simashev (6'4", 198), Maveric Lamoureux (6'7", 200), Gabe Smith (6'4", 208), Ethan Belchetz (6'5", 228), Daniil But (6'5", 203), Caleb Desnoyers (6'2", 178), and even a goalie, Michael Hrabal (6'6", 209).
If this shows one thing, it's that Utah loves to draft tall, physical players. This includes wingers, defensemen, centers, and a goalie. Plus, Utah traded for 6'6" Sebastian Cossa and signed veteran winger Anders Lee, 6'3".
Speed is certainly nice to have, and Utah does have some (Logan Cooley is among the fastest players in the NHL). But to have large, physical players in hockey is also a nice luxury. Not to mention, having the identity of a big, scary NHL team is also pretty fun too.
When it comes to defending a powerful team like the Colorado Avalanche or Dallas Stars, Utah wants a physical edge. Even with a ton of star talent, it's hard to beat a team that can beat you up physically. Plus, puck possession gets harder, and finding good shooting lanes does too.
The Mammoth have already taken some nice steps over the last couple of seasons. After tasting the postseason, Utah intends to compete. Hence, Utah added several veterans and is also apparently in the trade market.
By forming an identity around being tough and physical, Utah hopes to take another step forward.
