The Utah Mammoth won their second game straight in their return back home to get to 5-2-0. Last night was probably the most exciting game of the season so far for Utah.

After I predicted that this game would be a high scoring affair and end in favor of Utah 5-4, this game ended being exactly how I imagined it might be - a high scoring affair.

Utah defeats Toronto 5-4 in a thriller

The first period was pretty queit before the best power play unit in the NHL, the Mammoth PP unit, got a chance. Unfortunately, the 4-on-4 that turned into a power play later didn't convert into anything.

Late into the first period, however, Daniil But, who had struggled so far in 2026, scored a wonderful goal almost by himself (was assisted but created the chance himself and scored).

Only one minute into the second period, Utah scored another goal, with Vincent Trocheck netting his second goal of the season making it 2-0. Then, on a power play for the Maple Leafs, Mikhail Sergachev impressed with a shorthanded goal to make things 3-0.

Just when things were going all Utah's way, Auston Matthews put the Leafs right back into the game with a power play goal. In other words, three goals occurred in the matter of just five minutes. About 10 minutes later however, Dylan Guenther scored his fourth goal of the season to make it 4-1.

Toronto stayed in the game once again with a goal from Jack Roslovic which made it 4-2. With only 40 seconds in the second period left, MacKenzie Weegar concluded the second period with the sixth total goal and with his second of the season to make it 5-2.

The Leafs got a power play goal from John Tavares and then another goal from No. 1 pick Gavin McKenna to make it 5-4 with plenty of time left. But despite a 6-on-4 at one point and a enormous amount of pressure on Karel Vejmelka, he ended up stopping Toronto from tying the game, leading to a exciting 5-4 win.

Next, the Mammoth visit the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday night. That game against Edmonton is one of two in a row as the Mammoth will also return home on Saturday night to take on the Oilers.
