The return of Vincent Trocheck didn't end well for the Utah Mammoth, as the Mammoth suffered their first loss of the 2026-27 season.
Utah had to face two opponents on the road in back-to-back days, which may or may not have impacted it's play. Utah fought hard, but in the end it fell to 2-1-0 on the season.
Utah loses it's first game of the season
The Mammoth unfortunately didn't get off to the start their desired offensively in this one. Utah and New York remained tied for the majority of the first period before the Rangers took the lead on a goal from Vladislav Gavrikov.
The Mammoth managed tie the game up on the fourth goal already from center Nick Schmaltz on another assists from Clayton Keller (already his fifth in three games). The Mammoth and Rangers were in a bit of a battle where they just couldn't get much done offensively.
In the third period however, unfortunately Karel Vejmelka didn't look quite as good as before. New York retook the lead on a goal from Gabe Perreault, making it 2-1. Not long after, the Rangers scored again on a goal from J.T. Miller.

Andrew Peeke, the newly acquired defenseman gave Utah a little bit of life late in the third period with a nice goal. But unfortunately, Utah didn't create much more offense and had to empty the net to gain an extra attacker. The Rangers got one more goal, an empty netter, to seal the deal 4-2.
Utah outshot New York 30-22, the third straight time the Mammoth have done so. But unfortunately, that just wasn't enough as Igor Shesterkin looked great and racked up 28 saves on 30 shots. Utah visits the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night next, hoping to rebound and to get back on track.
