I usually do not like to write about controversial topics, but now that the dust has settled and I have had time to reflect on my feelings and opinions, I can comment with a clear mind on the importance of the Utah Mammoth's new mascot, Tusky.

The Utah Mammoth, formerly the Utah Hockey Club, played its first home regular-season game at the Delta Center with the Mammoth name and uniforms. The logos and name have been released for quite some time, but the real surprise pre-game was the reveal of the new mascot, Tusky.

In the new world of social media opinions, the NHL world certainly had strong opinions for our new fluffy, 6'5 friend. Although fluffy and adorable, Tusky brings some flair to himself with a bright blue mohawk and intimidating frame.

However, Tusky has come under some attack on social media by NHL fans and fellow NHL mascots. The brotherhood of the mascots around the NHL has never been strong, but what an introduction for our beloved Tusky. Carolina Hurricanes mascot, Stormy, took a shot at Tusky via X, formerly Twitter.

Additionally, many fans came to the attack of Tusky, and when I say fans, I mean adults. The mascot appears to be more important than the product on the ice these days in the media. Although Utah took a 3-1 victory against the Calgary Flames, Tusky was the main focus.

As a reminder, mascots are created for children who are fans or potential fans of the given team. It is meant to bring joy and create a family atmosphere. Whether the mascot is ugly or beautiful, it brings joy to children and helps create new fans. As a father of two young children, I have seen this firsthand.

I, for one, support Tusky and am looking forward to purchasing Tusky merchandise for me, I mean, my children. Remember, Mammoth fans, the team has a new mascot AND has won two straight on home ice.
