The Utah Mammoth, after making the postseason, will seek to compete in the Central Division. However, three huge teams will stand in their way. These teams are likely all considered big Stanley Cup favorites. Utah will definitely have to put together an amazing season to compete as the Dallas Stars, Colorado Avalanche, and Minnesota Wild have super teams that will be hard to beat.
The Mammoth have insane competition in the Central Division
The division favorite is probably the Colorado Avalanche, who were the best team in the NHL in the 2026-27 season. Colorado didn't lose any major talent, and they still have a great 1-2 punch when it comes to their goalie situation. Utah definitely isn't going to easily beat a team like Colorado for the Central Division. Then, there's the Dallas Stars, who also managed to keep together their elite team. They have a great goalie and several offensive superstars who are gonna make them an interesting team to face for anyone. Dallas is probably seen as a potential Stanley Cup contender, but they always seem to face a team like the Edmonton Oilers and lose in the playoffs.
Finally, there's the Minnesota Wild, who historically aren't great. But over the last few seasons, Minnesota has essentially built a super team. The Avs proved to be too much for Minnesota, but the Wild are coming back for more next season. The Wild also have a lot of different superstars and are strong in their goaltending. Interestingly, last season in the postseason, the Wild eliminated the Stars before being dismantled by the Avalanche. What was probably the most surprising series of the postseason was the sweep of the Avalanche at the hands of the Vegas Golden Knights.
If the postseason showed anything, it was that the Wild, Stars, and Avs didn't get too far at all. The big three of the division essentially destroyed each other before the Avs were embarrassed by the VGK. And funnily enough, the Mammoth were much closer to defeating Vegas than Colorado was. With the offseason the Mammoth have had, Utah is looking to compete for more than just a wild-card spot. The team wants to compete for a division title. Because after all, it's easier to get into the playoffs by competing for the division than competing for a wild card. At the very least, this division is going to be anything but easy to win.
