One of the biggest successes of the 2025-26 season for the Utah Mammoth was their defense. The defense had plenty of depth, players who could score, players who could play smart defense, and ultimately, this helped Utah massively. The Mammoth were a very balanced team this last season, with the defense having a major part in that, as they finished 43-33-6 before being eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Vegas Golden Knights. The key, though? They made the playoffs, and an upcoming free agent could help Utah do it again.

Edmonton Oiler defenseman may fit perfectly with the Mammoth

Darnell Nurse seemingly couldn't stop being criticized for his pretty awful performances in the 2025-26 season. However, before the trade deadline, the Edmonton Oilers acquired a defenseman, and one that helped massively to stop pucks from entering the net- Connor Murphy. The 33-year-old defenseman scored 5 goals and added 12 assists, which isn't bad for a defenseman. What Murphy mostly did, though, was be a critical factor for the defense of the Oilers.

He is not the most talented player by any means, at least athletically, but he is a smart player who can help relieve a goalie's pressure when the team needs it. The defenseman the Mammoth currently have would mix well with Murphy and ultimately create a more effective defense. Utah knows it needs more offense going forward, but it also recognizes the importance of defense, and Murphy would make sense for the team.

Defense wins championships

In football, it may not be uncommon to say that defense wins championships. This is because if a defense can consistently make stops, then the offense has pressure lifted off its back. The offense only needs to score a few times or a couple of times to win a game because the defense will keep the other team off the scoreboard. This is true not just in football, though; it is true in all sports, including hockey.

Utah can rely on its offense to score at least a few times per game, but it's still pretty young and can be inconsistent in future seasons. The Mammoth, with more defensive depth, would win many more games. It just feels like if the defense has depth and is even relatively good, then contending isn't hard at all with the exciting youngsters the team has. Murphy fits in Utah, even though they're interested in a Detroit Red Wings goalie and others as well so far this offseason. But after all, defense does in fact win championships- and Murphy is a good fit for Utah.
