Today is a day off in Utah, so it's a good time to step back and look at what the Utah Mammoth have done over the first 12 games of the season.
The Mammoth have seen some positive developments and some ugly ones as well:
Winners:
Nick Schmaltz, Clayton Keller, and Mikhail Sergachev:
Nick Schmaltz has cooled off slightly after a hot start, but he still has 7 goals and 6 assists in 12 games. Keller has totaled 15 points already this season, with 11 assists.
Keller hasn't been a big goal scorer, but Utah doesn't need him to be if he can continue to be consistent like he has in 2026-27 thus far. Sergachev has been a huge part of the offense, has he has three goals and 11 assists through 12 games as well.
Sergachev hasn't really slowed down and has been one of the NHL's best offensive defensemen so far. The Mammoth wouldn't mind to see Dylan Guenther perform a bit better and even Vincent Trocheck, but they don't seem to fit in the cateogory of "losers" or winners.
Losers:
Karel Vejmelka, the Penalty Kill, and Lawson Crouse
Karel Vejmelka has been up and down thus far, but at times has been hard to watch. The Mammoth offense has been tasked with too much because of lackluster performances from Vejmelka and the defense.
The penalty kill just hasn't been good at all; it's been uncoordinated and has shot itself in the foot. Lawson Crouse has been incredibly quiet thus far, with only one goal and three assists through 12 games. Crouse is capable of far more, so seeing him do better would be nice to see.
Ultimately, these guys and factors need to improve. The Mammoth face the Central Division-leading Minnesota Wild next.
