Do the Utah Mammoth fit the bill of the ideal trade partner for Dylan Larkin and the Detroit Red Wings?
Well, it entirely depends on whether Larkin decides to expand his trade list, and of course, Detroit will trade Larkin.
Does Utah actually make sense for Larkin?
Utah has already had a pretty good offseason. An offseason that is likely over. Utah added some key players: Vincent Trocheck, Anders Lee, Sebastian Cossa, and Andrew Peeke.
A trade idea was proposed by HEAVY, saying that the Mammoth might just be the best suitors for Larkin. Larkin would have to expand his trade list, and the Red Wings would have to accept the fact that Utah wouldn't overpay for Larkin.
In other words, Tij Iginla and Caleb Desnoyers should be, and probably would be, off-limits. The problem with this idea, though, is Utah's depth. Utah's top two centers are Nick Schmaltz and Logan Cooley, with the third being Barrett Hayton. Technically, if Utah was actually in need of a center, then Trocheck can easily play that position as he has done throughout his career.
The need for Larkin with three good centers isn't really there. Utah would have Larkin on the top line and probably have to find out what to do with Cooley and Schmaltz. Moving Schmaltz down the second line wouldn't make much sense because Cooley and Dylan Guenther work so well together.
Plus, moving Schmaltz down to the third line wouldn't make much sense either, as Schmaltz scored 33 goals and added 41 assists. Schmaltz has the ability to be an X-factor on the offense.
Trading for Larkin would add another superstar to Utah's roster, but the need isn't exactly there. If they consider it, though, they shouldn't give up a very good prospect.
