Upcoming unrestricted free agent Jason Robertson of the Dallas Stars has reportedly been shopped by Dallas. The Stars are definitely unaware of what Robertson's future with the organization is, but Robertson has reportedly been turning down some teams and might seek to really find a place that he personally likes. Even though Robertson would be a franchise-altering kind of sign-and-trade, Robertson will come at an insane price tag, a tag that a team that can afford him, like the Utah Mammoth, may not be willing to pay.

Robertson turns down $120M dollars

Although it is not known exactly what happened, the Seattle Kraken likely agreed to a trade that allowed them to speak with Robertson about an extension. This is, of course, before anything is officially announced, which means that since Robertson turned down Seattle, he will, for now, remain in Dallas. However, Robertson didn't just turn down a good deal; he turned down an insane deal. The Kraken, for some strange reason, offered an eight-year, $120M deal, which is an insane $15M AAV. For whatever reason, Robertson decided not to head to Seattle, perhaps because he really wants to win, among other reasons.

There is also a good chance that Robertson is seeking an even bigger deal, which would be asking for a lot of money, especially with other really good superstars not even making above 12 million a year. If this is the case, the Mammoth will be essentially eliminated from any trade involving Robertson, especially since Utah is seeking to improve different positions. It was already known that if he were traded, it would be a high price, but not that expensive.

NHL draft day may lead to massive trades

Tonight, the first round of the 2026 NHL Draft will take place, and it will be very exciting to see who is selected by which team and why. Some teams, however, will look to trade up or trade away picks. With a ton of speculation and actual trades over the last week, it wouldn't be surprising to see a lot of teams, including the Mammoth, trade for players or trade away players for picks. The Mammoth have historically been willing to select in the first round, and that strategy has gone well for Utah.

However, that doesn't mean they can't trade for stars or players that some teams may not need or may seek to get rid of. For now, the Robertson news is significant for Utah, since the team could've afforded him if he'd taken a more reasonable deal. The Mammoth though may need to fix other issues before they try to get a star like Jason Robertson.
