The Utah Mammoth have very little interest in, all likelihood, signing any major free agents. Which is probably because there isn't any. Perhaps one free agent could be intriguing for the Mammoth, but there isn't much in the FA class that stands out. With that being said, the Mammoth are likely going to make a trade or two, and Tuesday was a massive day, as it shows that the trade market is definitely going to be active.
Jordan Kyrou traded to Washington
Former St. Louis Blue, Jordan Kyrou, was traded to the Washington Capitals in return for the 16th overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, as well as Connor McMichael and prospect Milton Gastrin. For Washington, it makes sense as they are in need of scorers, and Kyrou can score a lot of goals. Kyrou was wildly disappointing this season, though, scoring only 42 points (18 goals, 24 assists). Kyrou previously had three straight 30-goal seasons, with 37 being his career high.
Ultimately, the Blues' need for the 28-year-old just wasn't there anymore, especially with the late-season emergence of Jimmy Snuggerud. The Blues get a good player in McMichael and get their 3rd first round pick of the 2026 NHL Draft. Washington has an uncertain future, so adding a good goal-scorer makes a lot of sense for them. Ultimately, the trade, though, might be important to the Mammoth, as it shows the steep price of players.
William Eklund traded to Ottawa
Interestingly, the Ottawa Senators wasted no time after trading their captain, Brady Tkachuk, and immediately added 23-year-old William Eklund, including two prospects. Eklund, the former 7th overall selection of the 2021 NHL Draft, has shown a lot of potential with the San Jose Sharks, who got the 9th overall pick (2026) in return for the package of players. Eklund scored 15 goals and added 43 assists this season, putting up 58 points in the 2025-26 season. Eklund has been pretty consistent in the last three seasons, and Ottawa will hope to unlock an even better version of him this season.
The Sharks, in the middle of a rebuild, will hope to get even better talent with the 9th pick of this draft. Ultimately, the Senators have some work to do to replace their former captain, but they don't seem to want to rebuild either. Eklund is a win-now kind of player for a team that made the postseason. Eklund is essentially a replacement for Tkachuk, but he will be a very different player.
Former 2nd overall moved to Calgary
The Calgary Flames decided to acquire former 2nd overall pick, defenseman Simon Nemec, and 27-year-old right-winger Maxim Tsyplakov. The Flames are hoping to improve their defense and add a good offensive player in Nemec, who scored 11 goals and added 15 assists in 68 games during the 2025-26 season. Tysplakov, meanwhile, is an unknown, as he was mostly a bench player. The New Jersey Devils, in return for Nemec and Tsyplakov, acquired a prospect defenseman, Etienne Morin, a 2nd-round pick (2026), a 1st-round pick (2027 or 2028), and another 1st-round pick (2028 or 2029). The Flames need to mix things up after going 34-39-8, while the Devils also seek to reach the playoffs again after a disappointing season.
Byram traded to Chicago for high-pick
Lastly, the Buffalo Sabres, who knew they couldn't really retain star defenseman Bowen Byram, traded him and a forward Jordan Greenway to the Chicago Blackhawks for defenseman Louis Crevier, the 4th pick overall in the 2026 Draft, and a 2nd round pick also in the 2026 draft. The Sabres simply got a ton in return for Byram, as the 4th pick is a pick that can be huge for the future of the team. For a team that pretty much knew they couldn't retain a star player, getting a pick that high is a pretty big win. The Blackhawks, meanwhile, need to climb back to contention, and they hope Byram can help them do that.
Ultimately, the Mammoth have yet to make any big moves, but there is plenty of talent left to trade. With the FA class as weak as it is, trading away talent or for talent may be the only way for some teams to get what they want this offseason. The checklist for the Mammoth this season isn't extensive, but they will still want to improve massively.
