The Utah Mammoth continued their good start to the 2026-27 season last night with a nice 5-3 win over the New Jersey Devils.
Nick Schmaltz scored his league leading fifth goal as defenseman Mikhail Sergachev added three assists in Utah's bounce back game.
Unfortunately, however, the star defenseman Sergachev left the game late in the second period with an injury.
The status of star defenseman remains unknown
In the second period, MacKenzie Weegar, a defenseman on the first line with Sergachev, tried to clear the puck out of the offensive zone. However, the puck ended up hitting Sergachev right on the side of his helmet.
This led to him heading into the locker room and not returning for the rest of the game. Overall, the status of the star isn't known.
Just before the beginning of the season, superstar defenseman Brock Faber for the Minnesota Wild suffered a very similiar injury. Unfortunately, he fractured his skull and had to have surgery, leading to Faber being out indefinitely.
This situation is very likely not to be as bad, but there hasn't been any updates concerning the health of the defenseman. Utah last week suffered a big loss with big defenseman Maveric Lamoureux having shoulder surgery and being sidelined for 4-6 months.

This potential injury to Sergachev could leave the Mammoth without significant depth. This makes the trade rumors for Simon Edvinsson all the more interesting. Utah is already pretty thin in their depth at the defender position, and a trade for the former first round pick may happen if Sergachev is sidelined for an extended period of time.
Right now, not much is known at all. But the hope for Utah is for Sergachev - a huge piece of the offense and defense to be healthy.
