Last night, the Utah Mammoth were quite active in the trade market, and the first trade they made was a pretty big one. JJ Peterka, whom they had acquired from the Buffalo Sabres last year, didn't do too well with the Mammoth in his first season. Utah decided to rid itself of Peterka and his contract, as he was traded to the Boston Bruins, who sent two first-round picks back to Utah for Peterka.
Boston Bruins: B+
The Bruins had literally no wingers at all other than two, with the biggest winger being David Pastrnak. To say the least, the team needed a winger who could provide a good amount of goals and points. Peterka fits well with Boston, as he scored 25 goals and added 22 assists for 47 points in the 2025-26 season. Such numbers were pretty underhwhelming for Utah after he racked up 68 the prior season, but Boston hopes the 24-year-old can become the 30-goal scorer he could've been in Utah. The trade isn't bad for Boston at all since he is only 24 and the team is in desperate need of some good wingers.
What Boston had to give up, though, for him wasn't too desirable. Boston didn't get a first-round pick in the 2026 NHL draft, as they sent the 23rd overall selection to Utah, along with a 2028 first-round pick. The 2028 pick will belong to Florida, though, if it lands in the top 10. In addition to giving picks, Boston will pay Peterka $ 7.7 million per season. If Peterka can grow into a better player, the trade is worth it though.
Utah Mammoth: A+
Aside from Peterka's disappointing stint in Utah, there is nothing to complain about. Utah has more assets that it can use to acquire someone big. Interestingly, the Mammoth also used the 23rd overall pick to get a huge goalie prospect. Simply put, the Mammoth were able to address their biggest issue and also freed up nearly $8 million, which is something to really keep an eye on. The Mammoth have reportedly been interested in trading for many superstars, inquiring about many, many players.
By getting more assets and freeing up some salary cap room, the Mammoth are now more flexible and are, in all likelihood, going to trade for a game-changer. By the end of the day, if the Mammoth can get themselves another superstar to help out Clayton Keller, this trade will go down as nothing less than a masterpiece by the Mammoth front office.
